Our family's experience

The memory care staff is great. Food is good, cleanliness is fine, Apartment is very small. Received a key fob for entry which is great. Admin's and Maintenance are slow to reply. Do not get patient status updates on care or activities, which would be nice to have.

Bickford of Bloomington

Staffing shortages: There appears to be a serious staff shortage throughout the facility, except in the kitchen. This is especially concerning for wheelchair-bound residents and those who can barely walk. The staffing level from approximately 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. is particularly alarming, with only a couple of staff members available to cover a three-story building, along with the attached memory care unit, serving approximately 60+ residents. Be specific and get everything in writing: New applicants and their families should ask very specific questions and get any important information in writing. Some details seem to be sugar-coated during the application process, and promises that were made have not always been kept. Families deserve clear, accurate information before making such an important decision. Maintenance and upkeep: Maintenance help is desperately needed. After many years, many aspects of the building and grounds appear to have fallen into disrepair. One newly hired maintenance person, working alone, cannot reasonably be expected to bring everything back to the condition it should be in—clean, safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. Who is allowed to live here: This is advertised as a senior living facility, but we were not made aware that younger adults, including people in their 40s, may be allowed to live here under circumstances such as having a parent who previously lived here. This has been very disruptive for some residents. Many of us chose senior living because we left our children behind and expected this chapter of our lives to be peaceful and appropriate for our age group. There needs to be greater transparency about who is eligible to live here and what can be done when a living arrangement becomes disruptive to other residents. Cost versus amenities: We all pay a significant amount for the relatively few amenities and services that were promised. While this may be one of the less expensive senior living options in the area, residents still deserve to receive the level of service, safety, maintenance, and amenities they are paying for. Being less expensive should not mean that important standards are overlooked.

Somewhat of a small dated facility. Definitely needs an upgrade to include ventilation. Memory Care side is quite small. Not the home feeling I was looking for.

Staff several are very caring which is why we stay but much turnover and poor training. Little communication between shifts, often not adequate numbers ie have to wait for someone to come back to answer a request for toileting or other, poor attention to nails, trimming and cleaning before and after meals since he finger feeds. Occ forget to put bib on Admin has poor communication with me, with staff, very poor in answering questions re meds, lost items which are many, family meetings, events Activities few observed but those were good. Few times came at time to observe and it didn't happen Food- inconsistent in providing mechanical soft with ground meat, ie lettuce salad, chunk meat, hamburger in bun Inconsistent in set up tray table, divided plates with elevated sides, provide spit cup Cleanliness he spits. Rarely clean walls, w/c, shoes, hat Laundry supposed to be separate for each resident but get other people's things and currently missing a flannel tied throw, spots don't get treated, on return clothes often thrown in closet other than hung or folded. Room is small and hard to move around. Also they had sprinkler problem this fall and it was 2 months before mess and drywall cleaned up. Entry to [removed name] needs some repair to door and frame.

The Executive Director gave us a thorough tour of the Bickford community and then answered all of our questions. She did a fabulous job! The residents looked quite happy in their environment. Everything was neat and clean.

Overall it's a good facility. Most of the staff I've dealt with are great. There are just a few who have been rude to my mother. But the head nurse resolves any issues quickly. They try to involve the residents in activities that the residents are interested in like bingo and other games.

Disappointed

The Service plan is not followed. The Wellness and Medical Director says he will do something but never follows through. The Executive Director is never available and does not return phone calls. The current staff-to-resident ratio is inadequate.

At times there is only 1 caregiver on duty for 15 residents and there are some very high fall risk that can not be left to tend to another need until someone comes from other side. There is not good communication between them at various levels.

What we like the most about Bickford of Bloomington is the way they make it feel like home for my step mom. Yes, I would recommend this community to other families. Our families experience

Some of the issues we experienced were with staffing. They didn't have enough help to keep things going some days. My dad passed away last month and their nursing staff was extremely helpful for a few days there. My dad did complain about the food at times as well.

Disappointed, do not recommend

The facility is in need of repairs and renovation. It use to be a beautiful facility that treated residents like family. Unfortunately, like so many other senior living options, it's corporate owned. There is less focus on the residents and more focus on profit. Some of the staff are outstanding. Due to a revolving door of management and lack of appreciation, the good people do not stay. We have a lot of family so Mom was well cared for by us and we advocated politely for her and the other residents. When we didn't see appropriate change, we moved her.

lack of communication from onsite and corporate levels

The lack of communication from the onsite team and corporate office has been unlike anything I have experienced from another organization. Our onsite experience was short as the facility was used for a 30 day respite stay. Three of the four weeks of our loved one's stay, she did not receive the care we agreed upon and paid for. Since the time of her departure, we have spent 3 months trying to find a positive and reasonable solution for our experience with both the community and corporate office. Calls and emails have gone unanswered. Still trying to work thru this issue.

It's a nice place, we are on the 4th manager since I moved in. The staff is a mixture of good and so so. The housekeeping works hard, but they are made to help out on other things. Communication with the family is okay. Some of the food is good, and some not. I think they are trying to improve. I would recommend this facility to others.

Review for Bickford of Bloomington

My mom has been there a few months (independent living), and so far, the experience has been really good. The apartments are incredibly well laid out and clean. Mom really enjoys the food, activities, and loves the weekly cleaning. The facilities are very nice - beautiful building and grounds - and the place seems very well kept. Staff has been very friendly and seem to be helpful. I've had limited interaction with most because I'm there several nights a week and weekends when it's not as heavily staffed but residents seem well cared for, staff is always very nice, and mom seems fond of them. Based on my experience this far, I would definitely recommend Bickford to others.

Not recommended

I was told, when looking for a place, that Bickford was a skilled nursing facility. They are not. They are charging us a level 5 and we are not getting the care of that level. There is no communication with us, unless we call for a meeting. The move in process was rough. We were told we were getting a "new" apartment, but there was no paint and no new carpet. The meals are adequate. My loved one is very picky and they try hard to get her something she likes. They need more workers. And ones that care about people. They have one nurse who is the best and one CNA that is great. Others are off the street with no training. They have one maintenance worker who can't possibly keep up with things. We can't move because no other place has apartments. The housekeeping is below acceptable. I would not recommend this facility under present management and staff.

An amazing tour

Very beautiful building and the ambiance was so warm and inviting. The staff was very welcoming and I did not wait long at all to meet with [name removed], the person that was doing my tour. Everything was well explained to me and I left knowing that I made a good decision to place my mom on their memory care unit. I feel as though she will be in good hands. The activities seemed fun and exciting and the staff really paid attention to the residents. I am thankful that Bickford of Bloomington was there to carry my mom on her second journey in her life.

The staff at Bickford house I would 99% of the time try to make sure you have everything you need as much as they are able. If you talk to any one person, that person makes it their job to follow thru and make sure you get what you are in need of. Highest of ratings to the staff at Bickford. They give their best and honestly care about the people they care for. They treat us like family. The cleaning of the building is well done and kept up as well as holidays decorated and cheerfulness for all worked at. We had a bit of worker shortage during the holidays, but the ones who were here gave their all to keep our meals served, our needs met and the unit cleaned and organized. I can't say enough good about the chef(food is yummy and if you don't like his menu, he will make you something else.) The same goes for our amazing maintenance man who willingly gives up his days off to handle situations that come up in any home or apartment. He not only fixes what needs fixing, he goes above and beyond in helping you with your needs he is not responsible for. He brought my groceries in for me once and put my water on top of my fridge, which would have been next to impossible for me and he just did it and kept going to his next job. Communication with my family has been excellent. They always take the calls and answer my family's concerns so they feel comfortable with me being here. I highly recommend living here. They are working on staff training and improvement and have a monthly meeting to hear the residents' concerns, interests and needs. That is especially high on my like list. I had one issue that I had a major problem with and after speaking up about it, it was corrected within 24 hours. I was highly impressed. Bickford, like any organization, is a constantly changing, adding new ideas, answering residents concerns and trying to give the residents here the best life they can have. My health has improved in all areas since my move here and I'm hoping it keeps up that way. I recommend Bickford for apartment living with help as you need it.
