He had lived under our roof for 13 years. A lot of mixed emotions. I think his situation at Great Oaks was the perfect way for him to have a place to live and him be able to maintain some independence while keeping him safe and taking care of the things he had difficulties with. He got a larger room with independent bedroom and living space. That made it similar to him arrangement at our place. The staff has been awesome and have taken good care of him. My wife and I are able to travel some knowing he is safe and being taken care of. I visit him everyday because I want him to know he is not being forgotten. He also has other activities that he does outside Great Oaks 3-4 days a week so that helps as well. They check on him every 2 hours 24/7. So I have confidence he will not fall through the cracks. Men don't typically do well in these environments but I think my dad has actually improved. We have planned a 90th birthday party for him in December and all his family is traveling to celebrate. I think a big part is even though he is in assisted living doesn't mean he is close to death.. his life is over. It is a beautiful place and always clean. Cost is high but is comparable with other nice assisted living facilities.
