Review for StoryPoint Shaker Heights

The building is beautiful inside. There are common areas on each floor that residents can use. Dining room staff are very, very nice, but service is often slow. Food selection and quality is hit or miss. They need more nurse's aides. There were times I had to wait 45 - 60 minutes for an aide after calling for one. Apartment size was adequate with large windows for lots of light.

Our experience

Staff were quite encouraging trying to engage residents to join activities and eat in the dining room. 3 levels of care were available, 1, 2, or 3 person assisted care. The level of care is re-evaluated each month and each resident's monthly care fee is adjusted per month. The rent fee is by yearly contract. I felt the fees were very reasonable compared to other facilities. The care team tried to adequately provide the care needed but was always understaffed. This had caused delays when my husband urgently needed assistance. The facility is very modern, beautiful , and clean. Housekeeping was great, every week. Laundry service was sometimes delayed or forgotten occasionally. I would need to remind them that laundry needed to be done and bed sheets changed every week. Laundry would be returned nicely folded and sometimes placed back on shelves/drawers or hung up as needed Visitors are asked to sign in/out when visiting. Someone is always in attendance at the front desk. There is transportation available for shopping or appointments. They try to arrange on specific days but do honor requests for exceptions and can handle wheelchairs or power chairs on the bus. Dining and food were excellent. Not salty or extra starchy. The chef met w new residents for their food preferences and allergies. Fresh fruits and vegetables were always available. Usually 2 options for meals but residents could request something different and it would be prepared. The dining room was like a first class restaurant. Cloth table coverings and cloth napkins. Wine also available. Pet and music therapy available. PT and OT services available in house. Craft, tv entertainment rooms available. Private dining rooms available for small friends or family get togethers. Unfortunately the administrative staff was always changing. There were 5 different directors during our 7 months at Story Point and there was never any reason given to residents, sometimes no notification of a change. The directors were given no notice, told they were being replaced the next day. I learned that first hand from personal phone calls w more than one. That was very unfortunate. Each director tried their best to run the facility well. We had in-house pharmacy except for 2 cancer specialty medications that I would provide to them, as was noted in our contract. Those cancer medications often got misplaced or lost. Somehow due to constant changes of pharmacy nurses, the cancer medications got ordered through their pharmacy and they were charging me for those. It took almost a year and 5 different directors, each starting to resolve the duplication, before each one getting replaced before the pharmacy issue was resolved. It was ultimately resolved by the parent company of Story Point. So the administration gets a very low ranking.

Room for improvement

The place is physically beautiful, but they cannot keep staff. The memory care unit is under-staffed. Some of the "caregivers" need to be in another line of work. They do not give equal attention to every resident.

Somewhat Disappointing

The artwork and modern design of the building stand out. I'm on the fence as to whether I would recommend this place to others. They seem to be short staffed.

dont do it!

I have no idea where to even start with this place... TO start off dining is terrible they do not get there food for an hour PLUS.. Room orders dont get delivered on time they do not receive breakfast until 11-12 This is the start of lunch time. Half of the amenities that are offered and services that were offered to us never happened or existed. Activities are terrible... No residents care to show up. Ive seen a resident lead an excersize because no one showed up to host it like they were supposed to. Theres alot of broken promises. I bring a lot of things to the directors attention. Have yet to get done. The caregiver to resident ratio is BAD they have 2 caregivers to assigned to three floor on their assisted living unit and one nurse. This is a reoccurance not just a one day thing. No one in there seems to know what they're doing. Repeated meals, theres been days when they had no milk or juice. We (family members) have called state multiple times. Not to mention 4 DONs quit within 6m!

StoryPoint Shaker Heights

My mother only lived at Story Point Shaker Heights two weeks before she died. But it was an important time for her, for us, for visitors. Most of that time she was fully interactive although she didn't get out of bed much. She entered on a hospice basis, having been transported from in-patient hospice at [Name Removed]. I probably ate more of the food than she did and found very good. She wasn't as enthusiastic but she couldn't taste much. I visited multiple times daily and her care appeared to be careful and sympathetic. There were a few changes in administration while she was there, and I didn't always know who to speak with. But the care personnel were consistent and helpful. We were only charged the portion of the month rent (plus the community fee) since she moved in the second week of the month. But after she passed I was billed for balance of a full month. When I objected, the additional charge was eventually dropped. Facilities were clean and well maintained. Staff was friendly and helpful.

The facility is very modern and well kept. The apartment size is OK and again very clean and well kept. From the meals. I ate there and my conversations with my sister, the food and dining experience is excellent and activities appear to be very good. Only a couple of fairly minor issues. She didn't receive an orientation immediately upon moving in, which would've been extremely helpful. And she's had problems with a flooding shower which they are addressing Overall we are very satisfied.

Beautiful facility with Caring staff

Restricted entry after 8 pm. Must ring nurse office to enter. They were very accommodating and understanding of our brief stay (two weeks). Important to note they provided hospice care. Not sure all AL facilities offer that.

Review for StoryPoint Shaker Heights

Frequent staff turnover and sometimes not enough staff to respond to residents in a timely manner, but even the new staff are friendly and helpful. Bathrooms could use a more thorough cleaning, but average. Chef prepared meals. The chef meets w each new resident to learn of their preferences. Excellent selection of meals. Dining room is beautiful, like a restaurant w cloth napkins, very nice dinnerware and goblets. No plastic utensils, except when a virus was going around. When there was a virus going around, everyone was confined to their room and meals were brought to each resident 3 times a day. Music presentations. Movies, day outings, exercise classes, hair salon available certain days, family and friends holiday dinners, crafts, and lectures. Room and board has a yearly rate that increases each year. Level of care is added, 3 levels available depending upon the resident. Level of care is set up w the initial admission, then after 1 month then routinely every 6 months. Level of care will be re-evaluated if the health status of the resident changes for a month or more. I found Story Point to be much more reasonable w pricing and level of care than several I visited. They have extra levels that allow for a 1, 2, or 3 person assist rather than just one person, which was very valuable for my husband, especially as his level of care changed sometimes monthly. I found Story Point to be the friendliest even w frequent staff changes of a previous assisted living facility. They almost always stop to talk with you, call you by name, even the administrative members. They also cry with you when your loved one passes. The apartments are perfect size w generous sized bathroom. Kitchen has the necessities, sink, cabinets, and refrigerator. No need for an oven or extra appliances as a dishwasher. The building is very modern and exceptionally clean, also always smells nice.

Our experience w Story Point has been truly positive. The staff are very friendly, stopping to talk w residents in the hallways, calling them by name, and always asking if there’s anything they can help with. Quick response times w call buttons are appreciated and necessary. Each resident is greeted by the chef. He asks about likes, dislikes, and portion sizes. The food and menu selection is restaurant 5 star. Story Points is in a wonderful location and the facility itself is beautiful. [name removed] is knowledgeable about everything or can find out quickly. She is wonderful. I highly recommend Story Point for assisted living especially after moving my husband in/out of previous facilities that did not meet our expectations or needs. I classify Story Point as an acute care assisted living facility as they are able to care for residents w extra care needs.

If you love your loved one, stay away

This facility has major management issues and appears far more concerned with making money than they do with providing appropriate care. If you have any other options, send your loved one somewhere else. They may live longer because of it.

Review for HarborChase of Shaker Heights

Harbor Chase did not follow through on their promise to care for my dad who was in hospice care. In fact, the young aides (some teenagers) informed me that they were not trained to care for my dad. As a result I had to stay with him all night to make sure that he was properly attended to. It was frustrating to watch the slow response time time when my dad needed help. At times no one showed up for 30 minutes to an hour. By the time they did show up I had already helped my dad to the bathroom and back. The one time that I did leave late in the night, I returned the next day to find that he was not served breakfast. Please do not refer anyone in dire need of immediate care to this facility. I had to leave with my dad in less than a week there. Management was so appalled at their own inept staff that they gave me a full refund. Please do not refer anyone in dire need of care to this facility

Not a good place for memory care

Good food and nice decor do not care for the elderly. The right care does. This community lacks this. If an assisted living community highlights their care with a restaurant and hospitality, that tells you all you need to know.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know Ohio’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Ohio’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
