Big disappointment

My parents moved to the independent living villas at the end of [date removed]. We knew very little, such as - even though WiFi was included in the rent, it was not explained that we would have to order it upon moving in. It took 4 days to get that hooked up. We had many questions such as when is trash pick up? Is recycling put out the same day? Is recycling weekly? Can we put nails in the walls? (A handbook would've been very handy) Not only were these things not made clear from the start but whenever we called the office, the staff knew nothing about how things were done "on the independent side." When one staff member couldn't locate someone for an answer, she came back to the phone and told me "No one recycles anyway. Don't worry about it. " I stayed with my parents day and night for the first 2 weeks, then visited daily thereafter. I noticed during that time things about them that I hadn't realized before. My mom needed some daily assistance with bathing and dressing. She'd never cooked on an electric range and it was impossible for her to learn. Her hygiene was suffering, as she was unable to clean herself after using the toilet due to severe shoulder pain. Dad was ok with self care but the move really did a number on his cognitive function. No amount of labeling made it so he could find his way around. He continued to go to the food pantry to do laundry and open the dishwasher looking for trash bags. Within about a month and a half, he became very ill. We moved my parents to the assisted living side when he was put on hospice. The care he received both from Hospice and StoryPoint was not an ounce more than the bare minimum. A quick check every few hours and some meds. Bed rails were not allowed so a mat - like those anti fatigue mats you see in kitchens - was placed on the floor next to dad's bed to break a fall if he fell. And fall he would have had it not been for my sister and I keeping watch day and night until he passed away a week later. Mom would go in to sit bedside and kick the mat out of position. The staff would come in to give meds and kick the mat out of position. Dad was in an extreme state of agitation and spent hours attempting to get out of the bed. (He was hospitalized for 2 weeks, strictly bedridden, prior to this and his legs would not have supported him had he attempted to stand) More times than not, the mat was askew and would have offered zero cushioning in the event of a fall. The staff never offered bites of food although the kitchen always sent mash for him. I get it that we don't eat at the end of life, but who's to say one is no longer interested in eating when it's not offered? Once, when dad managed to get his soiled brief down to his knees, an aide pulled it back up. I stopped her from leaving and mentioned that it was soiled and she did go back and change it. When I talked to the wellness director, [name removed], about this she simply said "Ya know, you can't teach common sense." I didn't appreciate that response one bit! I was in the room with dad when he took his final breath. In the time it took to get a staff member in the room to then calling hospice, to then waiting for someone from the funeral home to arrive, it was 3 hours that mom and I sat with his deceased body in the other room. No staff members from StoryPointe offered any emotional support during those 3 hours. A small group was heard outside the room chit chatting and giggling with the hospice employee while awaiting someone from the funeral home. I felt that was extremely rude. Once Mom was on her own, she really was on her own. I continued to visit daily and asked numerous times why she wasn't being showered on shower days or why her hearing aids weren't put in. She once cut her leg pretty badly on the car door and I was told that staff are not allowed to change a bandage. That is wound care. They would have to have a visiting nurse come in twice weekly. I was ok with that. But never did a nurse show up. I continued to care for her wound myself ($[removed] monthly rent!) I questioned the executive director, [name removed], at one point about the lack of attention Mom seemed to be receiving and she said "it's because the girls see that you're here and they just assume that if family is here, family is taking care of their loved one." And that "staff are nervous to care for your loved one while you're here." I explained that I was there waiting to see anything that gave me confidence that Mom was in good hands in my absence. The only shower I am aware that staff helped Mom with ( I showered her myself when I noticed a strong odor) went like this... Staff member leaving Mom in her bedroom to dry off and get dressed... I stop her and ask if she would help with mom's hearing aids. She calls out to mom ( who can't hear) "[name removed]when you're dressed just buzz me and I'll come back to put your hearing aids in." I stop staff member again "Can you make sure she heard you and then show her what you mean by buzz you? She's never used the call button and won't remember what it is. " Staff member shows mom where buzzer (necklace) is. I stop staff member again and ask "Can you show her how to hold the button down until she feels it vibrate?" (I learned a few weeks prior that you can push that button all day/night long and no one will ever know it unless you hold it down long enough for it to vibrate.) Mom had dental surgery and I decided to keep her overnight at my house to ensure her comfort for that first 24 hours. They gave me her meds and mom later questioned why I wasn't giving her the xarelto that eve. When I brought her back to Storypoint the next day I learned that they had run out of the xarelto (blood thinner) and that is why they didn't send it with me the night before. An aide said they now had it so I asked if mom should get a dose being she missed last night’s. She reassured me they would give it to her as usual with her other meds that later that eve. Long story shorter, mom was told 2 days later when she questioned staff about (still) not getting her xarelto, that her daughter never brought her xarelto back to the facility after taking her home for an overnight stay. Mom's mind isn't that far gone!!! She called me immediately to tell me what they said to her. I never did find out how long she went without her medication, but once I was aware they were still out, they sure did get some in that very next day. I was lied to by the aide the day I brought her back. I believe that is why she declined to give mom her missed dose right then and reassured me it was ok for her to wait until that eve. As far as cleanliness, the facility appears squeaky clean on the surface. Mom's room was not being cleaned regularly, as I would notice the same dried spills on the kitchenette floor and the ants got out of hand. They had Orkin in the room twice. I worried about Mom with all the pesticide. The ants remained dead on the floors in the apartment for several weeks. There were sticky traps that mom kicked over and spilled on the floors for several weeks. Mother's Day brought visitors to mom's place and the ant traps were visible as far back as then. As I said in an earlier text, maybe I don't have a clear understanding of what "assisted living" entails. But many of these things I don't feel were asking too much of the staff. I constantly pardoned them and laughed with them trying to ease up on my expectations and have them feel comfortable in my presence. But, not when it came to mom's meds!!! Someone dropped the ball on that. I'll never know what really happened.

Excellent Assisted Living Facility.

The friendliness and efficiency of all staff was absolutely wonderful. I couldn't ask for a more caring and compassion-at home- away-from- home for my husband. The meals were very tasty and well prepared. I have already recommenced and will continue to recommend StoryPoint to others.

Newer Community with Strong Safety Features

The community is newer. Extra safety. Measures in apartments (infrared cameras to detect falls). Medtechs are nice and patient. New management started this past spring/summer. Several of the management has left, but it hasn't seemed to affect the daily life of my mom, which is good.

Highly recommended.

Everyone on every level of staff was extremely helpful, supportive, kind, and welcoming. I felt at home there as did my boss who was trying to accept his new "normal". The facility was clean...CLEAN! No smells or overpowering cover up of smells, I was very impressed with the entrance and comfort of the place as a whole. The residents were out and about walking around and actually doing the activities, which were catered towards all ages and stages of adulthood.

A nice place fir your mom or dad

What we like the most about Provision Living is that the community isn't huge and is on one floor, which is nice for my mom to get around. Staff are really friendly, accommodating, and very patient. Residents are also really nice and welcoming. Yes. I would definitely recommend them to others.

Beautiful facility with very good daily care employees, disappointed with lack of help from Dr and referrals

Beautiful facility good room setup. My mom really liked the people who took care of her needs daily- good people. I gave it a 3 overall because they really hyped the medical care aspect. Although my mom was weak with heart failure- they did not assist at all finding her a new cardiologist locally, or finding her a family practitioner. We had to do this all on our own ; it was very difficult because we were new to the area. I would make sure people who need specialized care know this going in. The doctors they say are present to serve the residents are very scarce- kind of a total scam with saying that. My mom died a month after moving in. She did not get the medical maintenance we were led to believe- whether we were snowed or had a misperception would be up for debate.

Our Families experience

We give them a 4 overall, not due to the facility but due to the limitations in nursing care. Limitations set by the State. However, it is a lovely place. Staff professional and very loving and considerate of clients. They offer many activities for clients and families. They always assist families and encourage clients and family participation.

Very nice facility and compassionate care

It was very clean and open, people are all very nice. Employees mostly all sincere. It was a bit more difficult to get dr and cardiology care/ referrals set up- the medical care was mostly on your own. This was difficult because we were coming from up north. The level of care my mom needed was expensive, however I am sure you probably get what you pay for. The care and food at provisional was way better than our previous facility.

Highly recommend Provision Living

We chose Provision Living at Fenton over other places that we looked because the staff were able to answer all of my questions, they knew all the residents by name and would ask them about their life. They also remembered details about me during follow up visits which is something that really stuck out to me. The staff doesn't just care for their residents, they also care for the families too.

I toured this facility and I LOVED it! When I arrived, there was a sign that said "Welcome Family of [name removed]. A nice personal touch! The receptionist even sat with me and discussed how difficult the decision must be. I had a hard time not choosing them, but took into consideration the rest of the family and the convenience of visiting. I'm serious when I say I LOVED this facility!

Very clean, caring and professional staff. They interact well with the patients and their families:). At first, not good communication but, within a week and 2 meetings all was set. Now she is in hospice comfort care. Confined to a wheelchair and bed with fallmat. Anything she needs is spot in through Angels to Angels hospice. Their communication is spot on and she has the best care all around!
