Poor experience, would not recommend. Non-responsive to Concerns.

Started out ok. Turned terrible. He was able to get off of the secured floor on 4 occasions. The last time he was escorted OFF of the SECURE floor by the manager on duty... a maintenance worker. This led to a major outburst and scene in the lobby. My brother had to leave his work to assist in getting him back to his room. Never saw any activities. Apt size was good. They are short staffed. there is not a licensed clinician on site 24/7.

The front desk staff were nice, if not a bit chaotic, as there was some sort of mixup. Even with an appt they weren't prepared for me. The gal that got stuck doing the tour was very sweet & obviously liked her job, however when I asked to see the memory unit, I was shocked at how filthy the tile floor in the dining room was. It looked like it hadn't been mopped in months. Really depressing. The rooms were fine, but residents are not allowed to take their meals in their rooms. They *have* to eat communally. One of aides helping serve was covered in tattoos with ratty hair that made her appear more like a bartender at 1st Avenue, than an aide in a senior/nursing home, & she had a poor attitude when a question was asked of her. She almost rolled her eyes. No shade on tattoos or dreads on a white girl - I have a quarter sleeve myself- but it just didn't look very professional, especially when working with 80- 90 yr olds who traditionally frown upon tatts.

New Perspectives is an absolute gem. A gorgeous facility with friendly and knowledgeable staff, a bistro where you can order off the menu if you like, community rooms, tv room, classes, an outdoor space, spacious apartments, and all for less money than what we were paying at a subpar facility!

I thought New Perspective was a place that my mother could thrive. It was clean, bright, and pretty. The people there seemed happy too. The space is kept well and I felt welcomed on my tour. They seem to have a variety of fun activities for seniors and I also noticed that families were there visiting their loved ones and felt welcomed.

New Perspective Golden Valley

What I like the most about the community is the cleanliness, however no, I wouldn't recommend. Perhaps with the new management change that I believe happened a couple months ago, it is now better but poor quality of care and lack of activities would prevent me from endorsing it as a place to go. All else, was, as I wrote, about a level 4 on the scale.

Horrible experience, would never recommend

Staff was horrible, from executive down to aids. Aids yelled at my mother-in-law, did not approach her with understanding or compassion, they gave orders instead of suggestions. There was no activities for the first 2 weeks as they were not an activities director. Once one started, the activities were pathetic, and no one attended them. Dining was depressing. Not great food options and everyone had their own tables and people they like to sit with. Very uninviting and non-inclusive. Overall horrible experience.

A very positive and happy energy every time I come.

They made my mom feel welcomed and loved every day. Everyone is very attentive and friendly to all of the residents. [name removed] really looks after my mom like family and it’s much appreciated !!! They make sure that she comes out of her room for her meals and try to get her involved in activities by reminding her that things are going on throughout the day. Without that encouragement, my mom might really feel alone, but she does not hear. This has been a really hard experience for my mom yet they make it smooth every single day with everyone’s help..

Welcoming Community and Caring Staff

The staff get to know residents very well, care is tailored to the resident's needs with an "age in place" model. The cookies baked fresh daily, the flavored water, the variety of menu options and activities are wonderful. Some areas of the facility have what I consider a "nursing home smell" that can be unpleasant but it seems to be limited to only a couple of specific areas. The rooms, hallways and gathering areas are kept clean and tidy. They seem to work hard to give the facility the feeling of "being home" with a welcoming community.

Language barrier with caregivers

Many language issues. Care givers and wait staff have very poor English skills. Wait time for help is unacceptable. There were no outside of the building activities scheduled while I was there are 2.5 months! I liked my apartment. It was spacious but kitchenette was very inadequate. 45 minutes into meal time, they would run out of entrees.

lovely place and lovely people

The building is warm , cozy, and "just like being at our own home". The entire staff at Sunrise are kind, helpful and they are genuinely sincere about wanting to help the residents that live there. The food is very good . The menus are diverse enough that they would appeal to a wide range of folks. I feel that my sister and I made a fabulous choice of a " home" for our mom. By the way, my 93 year old mom feels the same way!

Beautiful facility

With the exception of the dining room there seems to be sufficient staff, all of whom are friendly and helpful. Dining room is under staffed. It is beautiful. The room is good size and cheery. I was impressed by the features included...weekly cleaning and laundry including put away. Cable TV included. Friendly associates. The hope of outdoor areas.....once spring arrives. Mainly I believe my brother is safe and taken care of.

Caring and responsive team

My mom has been living at Sunrise for over a month while healing from a sudden health issue impacting mobility and cognition. When looking at different facilities, it jumped out to us that Sunrise asked just as many questions about Mom’s condition and ways to support her as we were asking about them. The care plan is customized to her needs so she feels comfortable and supported. The whole staff treats Mom with respect and care, as well as the rest of our family! We are very involved in Mom’s care and we’ve gotten to know a lot of the wonderful staff. When adjustments have been needed for Mom, they’ve been happy to pivot and help. And Mom receives her PT and OT on-site! The support and flexibility of Sunrise is helping not only Mom, but our whole family caring for Mom.

Friendly staff,

What our family likes the most about Sunrise of Golden valley is the friendliest of the staff and the layout of the building and her room. Lots of sunlight and open space and even a patio on the memory floor. Location was a big plus too and the fact that there's a nice park across the street to walk in.

Not recommended

My loved one was previously a resident at Sunrise of Golden Valley and the overall experience was terrible at this facility. They were understaffed and we did not get the expected care. There was so much staff turnover, no one seemed to know what was going on. There was no walking program. I would not recommend this facility to others.

Tips for evaluating your community options.

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know Minnesota’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Minnesota’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
