Happy to Move to a Facility Dedicated to Memory Care

Happy to Move to a Facility Dedicated to Memory Care. After six years in one of the most upscale Senior living communities, I saw the need to move my relative to a facility dedicated solely to memory care. I first visited The Terraces is January. When I revisited again in May, after my relative was found to have a bed sore from sitting all day in front of the TV , I felt it was time to make the move. When I spoke with [name removed] the admission rep he addressed all of my previous concerns, and I also saw that they had been resolved. He is friendly and helpful, as is the Director and the staff. I was encouraged when the nurse was able to honestly help me with a question I had about the visiting medical services, and asked to meet me in person. After my family member had been in a generously sized room in the previous facility, the smallness of the rooms at The Terraces was a surprise. In May only a horseshoe room arrangement was available, not even a Jack and Jill. A horseshoe suit is two bedrooms connected by a little hall with a bathroom. They assured me they would let me know when a single became available--as that was what she was accustomed to. However, now after a few months, she is just fine where she is. Her room is small but has two big windows. There is room for a full bed, a nightstand and a chair on the wall with the bed, a narrow piece of furniture along the adjacent wall, and a dresser next to the closet at the end of the bed. Just enough room for what she actually needs. As she is in the common area most of the day doing activities, the time in her room is usually just for sleeping. I try to visit weekly, and have always found her involved in an activity. The residents vary in need, and it is refreshing to see some walking around and chatting. We have had no issues with cleanliness. Her room is always clean, and she is clean. Sometimes I am sorry they haven't given more thought to putting her outfits together, but that is my only hesitation about her care. There is also never an odor in the facility--which there had been at the "upscale" one. The food is aromatic, and appears to be actually created by a person and not just reheated or thrown together. There are not tablecloths on the tables, nothing fancy, but having the food be appealing is much more important. It has been a relief, also, to not see everyone seated around a TV all day not moving! At The Terraces there is a variety of areas, there is a TV but it is not the main attraction--too many other things are going on. It is what I was looking for for my relative--a place to keep her busy, her mind engaged. Someone at the previous facility told me because she was high functioning that she was falling through the cracks and not getting the attention others received. As it turns out, from new assessments, she is not high functioning--she was just being overlooked. I am relieved she is now in a place that will care for her as she is and give her the attention she deserves. I would highly recommend The Terraces.

Exceptional Care and Kindness

The Terraces at Via Verde has been everything I was looking for in a care facility. Everyone there has been welcoming, helpful, and most of all compassionate and supportive. Days are filled with activities and interactions. Communication is continuous. A special thank you to [names removed] for everything they have done and continue to do!

The Terraces at Via Verde

They were kind and caring. But I found my father at times not wearing shoes, urine soaked or his bed had not been made. They lacked the specific attention. I understand they are caring for a lot of people but for the price you expect a lot more attention.

Its a great place to put a loved one...For good care and keeping active

I have nothing to compare it with. This is all new to me. My overall experience, I've been very happy with the overall facility.. The people are very helpful. And I give the care people ALOT of credit for doing what they do....I was taking care of 1 person w/ dementia/Parkinson's/ sundowners/ Lewy bodies.... And i couldn't do it any more... they have a whole floor of them... I'm very grateful to them....The food looks really healthy, and they keep track of the different meals very well.... They have a lot of patience with these loved ones..... The activities are outstanding.... They have activities going on and off most of the day and the people enjoy getting together and doing the activities...Just to see smiles & laughter... The rooms, I think are good for what they use them for, sleeping... The 1 thing I'm a little disappointed in, is communication...Just that I was hoping that I could meet with the management or ones in charge after a week or to to hear overall how my person is doing...( When I'm not there) Or what I think of the facility. Or anything I need to bring him that he doesn't have or more of. Or medication that's gonna run out.... I ask the med tech, and the girls on the floor, but I just thought being new to get my options, or answer any questions I would have, not that I would have to track them down..... But again...that is just my thinking... This is all new to me... But I am very happy with the whole place overall... And other people I have brought to visit were as well happy & impressed...

The Terraces Review

They do a great job with mom. They specialize in memory care, meaning they only have memory care patients. After experiencing three types of service and facilities in this industry over the last six years I feel it's important that a facility focusing on memory care only is more effective in many aspects of this type of care itself. First, the facility is set up in such a way that it's highly unlikely a resident or patient can leave the facility, second, the staff that's hired are hyper sensitive to memory care itself and therefore higher quality of care, and last every time I or my family members have visit they are doing some sort of activity that's specific to memory care therapy or mind stimulation. Everyone at this facility has been awesome.

Review for The Terraces at Via Verde

I really like The Terraces. [Name Removed], who is the sales director, was so kind and compassionate and knowledgeable. I told him that he was a bright light in the middle of the dark journey that we were traveling with my Mom. [Name Removed], the nurse, has been extremely helpful and is also kind and compassionate and knowledgeable. I have not had much interaction with the director. The med tech and the caregivers whom I have met, I have all been the same. I can call and check on my mom anytime and they will give me a verbal report. My Mom enjoys the activities and the food both. Overall, we would give The Terraces the highest score. We are very happy with the care that Mom is receiving there.

MY MOTHER WAS HONORED WITH KINDNESS AND STAFF EXPERTISE

My mother was in the secured unit, where she had a private room. It was wonderful how she was able to bring in her own furnishings, with the electric bed furnished by the facility. We were so pleased with the extraordinary staff. There was such friendly staff, Greeting her and meeting her needs as if she was their Mother. She tried to be very independent, but the staff and their expertise, gently persuaded her to let them help her. She began to love all the attention and love. She finally had the nutrition she needed, with such wonderful meals. Nutrition and food was neglected when she tried to live in her own home. We had no idea, when The Terraces at Via Verde , prepared these wonderful meals, that her appetite would soar , and she would feel healthy once again. The staff and client ratio was absolutely perfect. No one lacked for attention, and each need met in a personal way. They made such an effort to have the clients participate in activities, and what was so beautiful, they included our family at all times. Welcoming each of us and inviting us to special activities. When my Mother was declining, they were the most compassionate staff, I could have ever imagined. They informed us step-by-step as she was presented with hospice. The staff calling family through every stage, was so warm and thoughtful. As family was by her side before she passed, the staff was so engaging and kept us informed , with every final portion of her journey before she passed. All of the professional staff prepared every step for the best family experience ever. Their professionalism, started with the interview , as she was going to be moving from her home, to enter her new residence with The Terraces at Via Verde . Thank you, from the bottom of our heart. I would recommend , The Terrace at Via Verde , to everyone that will be dealing with transition of family members.

The Terraces is a clean and beautiful facility. Oscar greeted me with such warmth. He is a bright light in the middle of navigating a dark tunnel for your loved one. He was so kind, compassionate, and interested in hearing about my Mom, who needs placement. We are praying that Mom will be able to become a resident there. Thank you.

Highly recommend for memory care.

They are so caring and sincere. There are so many activities and they genuinely keep my dad happy and busy. Or if he's tired they cater to him and help him back to his room. He is vegetarian and although he's the only vegetarian they go out of their way to make accommodations with all the meals. They keep posted daily with photos through the app life loop! It's great. It's extremely clean and never any smells. They are kind and the place looks like a resort with a beautiful garden patio in the center for getting sunlight. There are no visiting hours which is awesome because we can literally visit anytime we want. There is a calendar FULL of events daily. They have a salon so my dad can get manicures and a haircut weekly.

Short-Staff, Good People, Not Enough Support.

The caregivers I have a relationship with are overwhelmed. And I have an issue with the cleanliness of her bathroom, which makes me question her sanitary care. I find her hamper full most of the time. But the caregivers I encounter, I like, but they are overwhelmed.

Family experience .

The client, care giver ratio, is extraordinarily perfect !! She had such exceptional supervision . She knew the staff well, in her simple recognition, with patience, kindness respect and a smile !! Staff kept the out of state family informed, at all times . The coordinator staff person was always available with detailed reports for the families comfort and 100% confidence . Professional recommendations were provided and in consultation, when the time came for bedside hospice. Always a staff member by her bedside while waiting for out of state family . We knew Grandma was NEVER ALONE !! The general care, for activities of daily living , were so professional in experience and expertise. They accommodated, in every way, with our out of state family, a way to have special and private time with Grandma . The staff was so observant of weather conditions and safety measures always taken . 100% access to hydration.. So many positives.. I am elated to recommend this facility and the best experience, I could have only prayed for .. above and beyond our expectations . Thank you for this wonderful service to our beloved community of the senior

Care at a higher level!

I’ve been working in law enforcement for a little over 28yrs and don’t often get to see the good in people. After bringing our mom into The Terraces at Via Verde in San Dimas, I’ve been completely schooled at how well the team member work together, are in tune with one another and care. From day one they’ve treated us like all like family and mom is doing very well… she likes it! Thank you Terraces staff… we’re all thriving now.

Caring People

I placed my love on in this location where the workers are so caring and professional. They work there because they want to provide the best care for love ones when families can no longer be the main care givers. The food is absolutely delicious with varieties to make anyone excited to eat. The desserts are like being on a cruise ship. The staff is engaging with the residents and families. There are fun activities, interactions with all residents and staff. The location is quiet and beautiful. My mom is always clean and in fresh clothes. Her room is clean and her bed is made daily. There is an on site salon and the stylist gave my mother a nice hair cut. For families, information and photos are posted to keep them in the "Loop". This facility has won awards and I can see why, visit for yourself and enjoy a drink or a treat.

The best by far

Moving to The Terraces was the best decision I could ever make for my dad with his Alzheimer's disease. The staff are kind, empathetic, caring, attentive, responsive, helpful, thoughtful, actively involved daily with the residence, supportive, and innovative in their approach to daily activities and living with memory care issues. Elizabeth runs their daily activities and she has gotten my dad from gazing mindlessly in a chair all day, to dancing, tapping his fingers and feet while listening to music, he's now participating in table-top activities, he's engaged, alive, and has made a complete 180 degree positive change in alllllll his behavior and interactions. Their targeted programs really bring out the best in each resident, and it brings great comfort to the families knowing that they are truly in a hands of individuals who are experts in dealing with memory care issues. The doctor was going to increase my dad's medication because of behavioral issues at his prior memory care comm

Review for The Terraces at Via Verde

What does "experience so far" mean? I moved my husband out of The Terraces in May. Thus, ending "the experience". After 6 weeks of observation, I concluded, that my husband was constantly depressed. My husband is a "level one" which translates to, he can do self-care without assistance from staff. The new director always made sure he stopped and said "hello". He would always say, "how are you doing today 'young man'? My husband is 81, he knows he's not a young man. The daily greeting like that seems like a constant stream of bs. The director would also say, "I've got a job for you , [name removed]" but he never said what the job was. My husband has memory issues, but he is not suffering from any mental [profanity removed]. The director, according to my husband, seems more like a desperate used car salesman, eager to make the sale. My husband's assessment of that person is that he is so artificial. My husband was in law-enforcement for nearly forty years. He's been a pretty good judge of character, sometimes his life depended on it. The disingenuous "meet & greet" everyday was, of course, ridiculous. Most of us can sift through encounters with ppl who seem less than "straight-forward", so you probably know exactly what I am describing. The Terraces has dark wood every where, the rooms are dark, without much daylight. My husband was bored and depressed. The food was nothing spectacular, dinner often consists of a half of a sandwich and a handful of potato chips. For $[removed]per month? The Terraces is not a $[removed] per year operation, definitely. Staff is friendly and helpful, but in numbers that didn't seem adequate. Too many quit while we were there for the six+weeks. In that short amount of time, I paid about "$[removed]" (too much). I moved my husband to [removed], and from day one, it has been a positive experience. The amount of light, the bright colors, the happy staff, everything is in the positive column here. The gardens here are lovely and interesting. Plenty of daylight and happy colors. I wish I had brought him to the [removed] first. I would have saved a lot of money, he'd have gotten better care, consistently, and generally a less stressful experience, if I had only discovered the [removed] FIRST!

Review for The Terraces at Via Verde

The services they offered and the team work together with me in sharing the goals to assist in the care these elderly needed. To improve and help maintain their independence, welcoming holistic and or natural approaches if possible. The staff always look for ways to "spark" their brains to awake or remind them what they can do or could do. We also like they have OT/Pt on site and available.

A Wonderful Place!

I had to place my husband into memory care and chose The Terraces. He came in barely walking, talking, or feeding himself and now he is doing all three!!! The staff from the top to the bottom are so caring and take such good care of my husband and all the residents. There truly is a community. My husband has progressed so well that he now goes on outings with the other residents. The place is so clean and homey. They have a wonderful courtyard for them to go outside and enjoy the sunshine. I highly recommend this place. I know my husband is in great care.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Memory Care. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know California’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about California’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
