Brookdale Carmel is able to provide a higher level of care than many assisted living communities, especially for loved ones living with dementia or Alzheimer’s. That is a huge factor for families, along with the warm environment and the caring, experienced team. I have had the opportunity to work with [name removed] and several members of the staff, and it is clear how deeply they care about their residents and families. I would absolutely recommend Brookdale Carmel to anyone exploring senior living or memory care.

I'm being generous. We had a very bad experience with staff and administrator. What they could improve on would be Allowing family members in the room when staff is also in room. My Dad had a skin tear on his arm because they mishandled him and I wanted to be in the room and the staff wouldn't let me. They walked out and didn't check his arm to see he was bleeding. If I had not called the nurse to get his arm wrapped up, he would have bleed all night. The director needs to listen and respond to family concerns. When we had a meeting with her she said she would move him to another area with other staff and never did. My Dad was so scared of that staff. I took him out because the second meeting she had not done anything to help our situation. We had asked to get a food supplement such as Ensure because Dad was not eating a lot. They kept telling me to put it on the white card. I did, but no change. Activities only during week even though they said 7 days per week. Countless times staff would leave the area leaving the resident alone and wandering. Someone was suppose to be there at all times. I witnessed a resident that had urinated during dinner and an aide reprimanded her, threw a towel on the floor, left resident sitting in her urine, and go into that resident's room for 10 minutes. Came out with her phone so you knew she was on a personal call. Then take care of the resident. After removing my Dad from facility, contacted the State and Attorney General's office to inspect their operation. I would never place a loved one in that facility. We have been out of there for 2 years and I still have regrets of placing my Dad there. I don't think I will ever forgive myself or that house of horrors.

I would give a 5 to everything except Activities because our loved one is not a joiner and doesn't participate. I know that the staff encourages participation. The staff is friendly, caring, and knowledgeable. I think that every level, resident care is the focus of what they do. The architecture of the building offers lots of natural light and a sense of airiness.

The facility is undergoing changes and short on staff. Some changes impact continuity of care. The cost of care is more expensive than most facilities. The facility is in need of updating. The only reason we have stayed is they are the only one that accepts Lewy body dementia and one of the few that is actually age in place. Many say they are but this is not true as we have found.

Brookdale Carmel may have been good in the past, but it is no longer. With a few exceptions, my husband received substandard care. Some of the nurses in particular were careless with medicine and were defensive when challenged by family members. Vulnerable patients are on their own too much of the time with help too far away. The food is average; Few salads & a lot of canned fruit instead of fresh. Too little to drink. Small glass at a meal that was not refilled.

As a family we were so grateful to find Brookdale where our sometimes difficult mom got the personalized and loving care she deserved even when that was not the easiest thing to do as her dementia progressed. Their communication and involvement with our family was amazing. We just wish we had found Brookdale in the first place rather than trying Assisted Living and then Memory Care with the less than desirable [facility name removed]!

My mom has improved physically since she has been there so much hospice has told us they can’t take mom anymore because they say she has improved so much that she doesn’t need them. I can’t say enough good things about Brookdale, the staff make this place great.

This is the best place I've found to car for my wife who has lost her memory. It is memory care only and their dedication to this task is apparent in the everyday life of my resident life. The care givers are devoted to their task. It is a tribute to the management that the people they hire stay. This gives a long term stability that is not found a many other facilities.

My mom has been really happy at Brookdale. She was in a different placement before where she spent all her time in her room and didn’t make friends. Brookdale’s neighborhood approach has led her to feel included. She has made 3 friends. She has a great relationship with the caregivers. I could not be more pleased.

My husband has been there since 2/29/24. He has received very good care there from many CNAs & nurses. The activities people, [name removed], [name removed] & [name removed], have been great with games & exercises that have kept the residents as fit as possible. They also fixed a piece of exercise equipment in the fitness room that was broken when we first arrived at Brookdale & they responded promptly to repair it. The receptionists, [name removed], [name removed], [name removed], [name removed], etc have all been great & caring & very understanding to allow my husband to wave goodbye to me when I left at night. The nurses were very diligent with their most difficult duties taking care of meds for so many patients. The cleaning people have great, positive attitudes & do an excellent job of cleaning even the back side of towel rods. The heads of nursing have kept in touch very well & the executive director also checked to make sure my husband’s needs were being met. The cooks were responsive to patient dislikes.

Brookdale is a quality place for mom. They have taken good care of her. The staff is friendly and very helpful when asked. The place is overall clean but sometimes her room especially her bathroom could be better. The price is a little pricey but overall I am happy with our experience with Brookdale.

I like the "neighborhoods" of eight people that they have. Less overwhelming for people in memory care. They eat in their neighborhoods instead of having to go to a big dining room.People need to tour the places that they consider for their loved ones. Different people have different needs and what they think is important to them. I like that Brookdale has 24-hour nursing care available.
