Excellent experience with all levels of care

Staff are very caring, gentle, really get to know residents(though the facility is understaffed especially at night and weekends, which just seems to be industry standard. Their staffing levels are better than competitors though; I know people who work in the field). Facility is clean and they work hard to keep it so. Med techs are excellent. Food is decent but not great (my mom didn't really like it but that's one account). Kitchen staff are very helpful and will go out of their way to provide for residents outside of regular dining hours. Apartment size is quite comfortable. Rooms are clean, smell good, and have nice views. Activity staff are great! I experienced both standard and memory care and both were very good about involving residents and checking up on them to participate.

Overall a nice place

The rooms are very nice and it is a very nice entrance way when you walk in it's beautiful, clean, well kept...lovely. Because my grandmother is not needing a lot of care it's hard for me to tell you what it would be like if she needed transfer help, bathroom help, feeding help, etc. if she needed other help but right now she's pretty independent. The one thing I will have to say is when she was coming from rehab to Sunrise of Raleigh I wasn't really pleased on the communication regarding the cost of the facility. I was told one price and that's what I based on my budget and then when we moved her in which was 3 days later they told me it was going to be $[removed]more, we had already moved her into the room. The levels of care obviously coincides with the cost so there was miscommunication there. After 3 months I requested a reevaluation. I was able to bring the cost back down to where I originally had based my budget. So that wasn't really smooth in the beginning. The staff is very nice. They're very caring. And I am talking about the main stuff like the receptionist like the event coordinators in the staff in the kitchen. The other employees which are like the CNAs and the other staff who are the caretakers they seem to do a good job. The transportation is nice the activities are also nice w [name removed] is really good with the residents. The dining room is clean and the staff is very nice. The food is not that great. The food is mediocre. And sometimes it is cold and then the residents don't complain. But overall [name removed] does a good job as the executive director. They even have a hair salon which is nice. Like I mentioned I don't know how their care is once the resident needs a lot more one-on-one care. I haven't experienced that so I can't talk to that. I would think you would need to get that information from someone who has a resident there with more needs The room size and apartment size is really nice some rooms have two bedroom suite. Also the activities that they do for the residents is really nice. They definitely enjoy playing Bingo and the price is right

I was given a brief tour of Sunrise of Raleigh after an extensive tour of [community removed]. The living facilities were similar in scope. Here, I was impressed with the warm atmosphere of the facility and greetings from the staff and residents. The rooms were to my liking and satisfaction; especially those in the disabilities unit. I certainly would consider placing my loved one here.

Review for Sunrise of Raleigh

I appreciated the initial recommendations but when my father's care level increased, I was told it was out of the scope of what APFM did which was disappointing. It turned out one of your recommendations COULD accept him in his condition, but we just happened to find out about that when the facility called us to let us know about an opening (this had nothing to do directly with APFM when the facility contacted me). I also wish that your reps had gotten back to me quicker. I called twice and both times had to wait several days for a call back.

Things to know

Not enough staff in my opinion in the memory care unit. Room cleanliness was an issue. Some staff not thoroughly trained. They do have a hoyer lift which was the main reason we chose them over others.

Do not recommend

They are understaffed, and the care givers are untrained and not properly supervised. They posted a schedule both for care and activities that were rarely adhered to. The facility became unsafe for mom to stay there.

Consider Medical Needs

I think Sunrise is a great place if your loved one is pretty self-sufficient. Our issues came from the preliminary evaluation. We were very upfront about our loved one having ostomy bag, as well as a few cognitive issues. We felt he would go in to Sunrise as a level 3. The evaluation was not thorough enough, and he was admitted as a level 2, which indicated less assistance was needed. This was not the case. If your family member needs a little help with bathing, dressing, and someone to cook, and wants socialization activities, it is a very good place. If there are other medical issues, make sure a proper assessment is done.

Review for Sunrise of Raleigh

Everything is great, except the food. What is being served in the memory care unit does not seem to match the menu in the elevator. For example, the menu in the elevator said that memory care would eat eggplant Parmesan. The memory care unit actually received spaghetti with what looked like meat sauce. And steamed vegetables. Everything else = great. I also want to add that their nursing staff/med techs are great, and the Social Worker is steady and reassuring. She's been with Sunrise for a very long time, - she started out working in the dining room. She worked her way up to be a SW. There is a gentleman on staff who is great too. I thought he was a chaplain!! ?? There is a worship service (Christian nondenominational) on Sundays. The residents sing out of booklets. Mom loves that because she has always been in choirs.

I'm Not Impressed Yet

In touring facilities my family and I chose Sunrise Senior Living of Raleigh based on the prestation, mission statement, cleanliness, the material supplied and the promises of what to expect from a well equipped staff. What I have witnessed on frequent visits does not back those promises up. Three times I have had to deal with management about my concerns Turn over seems too much and some of the weekend staff leaves a lot to be desired. I'm closely watching and waiting for improvement.

High Needs Beware

Beware if higher level of care is needed. Even though higher level of care is available (and was charged and paid for) it really is not their wheelhouse. It was more like assisted existing (and short on compassion, understanding, grace; even felt abusive) vs. assisted living.

Lovely staff

Everyone was very nice and supportive. The staff we encountered were kind. The biggest miss was the option to use the internal pharmacy. This option was not communicated to us which resulting in delayed meds for my MIL. She was in distress, disoriented, and did not pass peacefully. Having the meds on board might have made a difference.

Visit the different places, we chose sunrise because they offered Hoyer lift, we didn't want to move mom again if she required more care. You all were so helpful setting up the appointments for me to visit the different places, thank you, it was very overwhelming.
